Grandiose crowds

Teodor Currentzis. MusicAeterna. Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre. Verdi. Requiem.
March 24th, Moscow Conservatory Grand Hall

in someone else's life
we turn light and shadow
or even more
wherefore we lose all, passing away for eternity,
we stay death and paradise.
I. Brodsky

For me the most striking was, as an ordinary provincial theater of opera and ballet, which by its inertia is able to adapt and curb any rush of innovations to the standard established repertoire, was able to overcome the depth and complexity of the Verdi Requiem, alien to the Russian operatic tradition.

Most likely - thanks to operas of Great Italian so popular and widespread in Russia. But the sound of a requiem is the canon of prayer of a different established harmony and meaning. Chanting of traditional Orthodox church worship is stretched, piercing and soft. And the slenderness and severity of the Catholic Mass are accurate, converged and directed upwards.

My opinion, formed after being present at the concert - the magnificence and rigidity of the orchestra under the direction of Teodor Currentzis did not allow composers idea to dissolve and crumble in the polyphony of the Russian choir characteristic to the classical Russian tradition. How amazing it was to hear the purity of the Siberian sound in the walls of the Moscow Conservatory Grand Hall, singing Requiem Verdi.

Grandiose crowds in the hall, filled with silence under the frozen stroke of the Maestro ... and stormy applause of the stunning finale.
