Mahler's Symphony #9 for the Christmas

When aren’t you afraid of superstitious fears? On Christmas.
Was G. Mahler afraid of the number of his last completed symphony? Obviously not.

Time allowed us to abandon bias of the form and complicated the task of performers. There is nothing to surprise the public. Labor-intensive professional work is evaluated dryly and by no means by all. But deviating from the position “innovation without skill and reflection is insignificant” the great musiciansa will never agree. Is Mahler’s 9th symphony innovative - unconditionally yes. Requiring the execution of the highest professional solvency - no doubt. How complicated is it? Enough of the possible. Happened? Undoubtedly!

Why is Mahler so complex and popular? Peculiarities of the perception of the classic, so-called “warming”, pacifying sound forms - melodic lines and modern “cooling” disturbing ones - are usually loved by different people.

But, a listener appeared, to which I belong, preferring both options. The availability of local listening to what you want in any conditions and circumstances is so high that the demand for a concert presence has changed. And the uniqueness of the versatility and schematic unusualness of many Mahler works causes such a high response.

Teodor Currentzis is a conductor who has the unique ability to get the orchestral sound - subtlety, tenderness, emotional explosive temperament, depth, and forcing the musicians to use accurate rhythmic calculation - otherwise this symphony cannot be played. And once again they succeeded - with brilliance.

Always waiting for something. Not cheap tricks and easily executed stamps - I am waiting for what makes my heart freeze and my imagination plays out:

     The waves set in a powerful storm ...
     Ah, here comes the calm ...
     And the cry of a lonely albatross who still has to fly and fly ...
     Feelings gathered in a lump in the boundless vastness,
     And the thought left vanity and ... rose to eternity by the sounds of the symphony.

Before the concert, I thought how to sit facing the maestro, probably I would feel the thrill of a novice performer. But I, having looked at him right away, looked at him a second time only at the end. The shock for which you are hurrying to the concert came ... and persisted with me for a long time.

And, finally, the new Zaryadye Hall, where I sat almost everywhere, which had never before struck me with its acoustics and atmosphere, opened up my possibilities. The sound reflected from the panels, from the bewitched sitting, and the feeling of immersion filled the walls and rose, filling with echoes of musical greatness. Acoustics earned and the atmosphere took place, giving the room status and attractiveness. Or uniqueness.

It remains only to thank Mr. Teodor Currentzis for how he selflessly makes every effort, approving the criteria of the best conductors of the Russian performing school. You take tasks of increased complexity. Never lower the level of claims and, demanding from yourself, reveal musicians. Behind all human efforts, one should feel the power of the elements, the tenderness of love, the dramatic nature of life and the severity of death - hidden in Great Music.
